Recognizing HBA Southwest’s Marketing & Communications Regional Director, Adriane Atkins

What is your current role professionally and with the HBA?
I am a medical science liaison (MSL). As an MSL, my main role is to serve as a scientific peer and resource within the medical community. My goal is to establish and maintain peer to peer relationships with other physicians at major academic institutions and clinics. My role is also to serve as a scientific expert to internal colleagues.

Currently, I serve as the regional director of social media and PR for the HBA Southwest Region. In this role, I support all regional marketing and communication needs through the use of social media platforms as well as media relations strategy and implementation.

How did you begin your career in healthcare?
My career in healthcare has been very fulfilling. I started my professional career as a primary care physician in Phoenix, AZ. One of my greatest joys as a physician was building strong relationships with patients from all walks of life. While practicing, I learned of the medical science liaison role within the pharmaceutical industry and transitioned into the MSL role in 2016. My experience as a healthcare provider and MSL gives me an ability to see the impact of medicine from the healthcare providers and the pharmaceutical industry's perspective.

What are one to two things that excite you about the future of healthcare and our industry?
Diversity and innovation make this an exciting time in healthcare and industry. I believe those are two important components that will move us forward in healthcare as a whole.

What are you passionate about?
I have a deep passion for community service and volunteering. I enjoy making a positive impact in the lives of others, no matter how big or small it is. My most recent volunteer role was with Dallas CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate). As a CASA advocate, I was committed to representing and advocating for the child's needs while in foster care. Giving back has allowed me to meet and impact the lives of many.

What motivated you to volunteer with the HBA?
I believe in the HBA's mission and core values. When the opportunity to presented for me to become more engaged with the organization, I was thrilled to take on a leadership position. My goal is to help my region and the organization continue to make a positive difference in the lives and careers of women in healthcare.
