As HBA Midwest Regional council chair, I had another opportunity to attend an outstanding chapter event in our Midwest region with HBA Columbus. The unique quality of this event is that it was a successful collaboration for the second year in a row with the local business paper, Columbus Business First. The joint effort by both teams has launched an ongoing collaborative partnership to produce an event attended by 300 people on the topic of leveraging the impact of female talent, LIFT. The key leaders in attendance included Becky Sparhawk, HBA Columbus president, Nick Fortine, president & publisher, Columbus Business First and Laurie Cooke, HBA president and CEO. Additional community representation included leaders from OhioHealth, CoverMyMeds and the OSU Wexner Medical Center. In addition, there was representation from Accenture along with the Mayor’s wife, chair of the Columbus Women's Commission. The keynote address was presented by Denice Torres, founder of the Mentoring Place and a former HBA Woman of the Year recipient.
Since the HBA's core purpose is “to further the advancement and impact of women in the business of healthcare”, the LIFT/Women in Healthcare Symposium is a perfect partnership, focusing on raising gender parity awareness and to share the research on this topic. The extensive research shows that leveraging the impact of female talent is not only the right thing to do but it’s proven to accelerate GDP growth.
The collaboration of this event provides the community with ongoing research and critical support. This partnership is an example of how the regional operating model, now in place throughout the HBA, benefits by receiving and sharing resources beyond the local chapter. The success of this collaboration makes it clear to me how powerful it would be to sponsor a regional event using the LIFT leadership principles. The seven LIFT principles are:
- articulate your vision
- set a shared goal
- own it
- level set the reality
- create a new dialogue
- get social and celebrate success
Let’s continue to find new ways to share resources throughout our regions. To quote the LIFT motto, “It begins with one. One company. One woman. One step in the right direction. Yes, it begins with one - you. Together we Lift”.
